Pregnancy is an exciting time for any family, but it often comes with unique challenges for your oral health. Hormonal changes can make your mouth more vulnerable to bacteria, resulting in a condition often referred to as “pregnancy gingivitis.” This is marked by swollen, tender, or bleeding gums, even if you’ve never had them before. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your smile! Continue reading to find four tips to keep your gums healthy throughout your pregnancy.
Brush Twice a Day
While it may seem obvious, it’s important to point out the simplest and most effective ways to help your gums stay healthy. Daily brushing to reduce bacteria in your mouth is your first line of defense against pregnancy gingivitis.
So, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to gently clean your teeth with small circles. Try to focus on your gumline, where plaque tends to build up the most.
Don’t Skip Flossing
Plaque doesn’t just build up on your teeth—it also hides between them. Flossing at least once a day removes plaque and food particles from areas your toothbrush can’t reach, reducing your risk of gum inflammation.
While it can feel time-consuming or even uncomfortable in some cases, it’s very important to clean your mouth thoroughly to prevent gum disease! If your gums are tender, try using waxed floss picks or a water flosser for a gentler experience.
Watch What You Eat
As the old adage goes, “You are what you eat.” What goes into your mouth can drastically affect your oral health as much as your overall health. Try to check product labels and eat a diet rich in calcium, vitamin C, and other nutrients to help strengthen your teeth and keep your immune system working well.
Visit Your Dentist Regularly
Regular dental checkups and cleanings are especially critical during pregnancy. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar that brushing and flossing can’t, reducing your risk of gingivitis dramatically.
The second trimester is often the best time for routine dental work. When you go, be sure to let your dentist know you’re pregnant, so they can tailor your care to meet your needs safely.
Pregnancy gingivitis is common, but it’s preventable with the right care. By brushing, flossing, eating well, and visiting your dentist, you can protect your smile and enjoy a smoother, healthier pregnancy.
