Dentures Aren’t Just For Seniors!

In our society today, we tend to associate dentures with growing old because they are a common solution to replace the permanent teeth we lose over the course of our lives. Because of this, there’s often a stigma associated with them that can deter younger people from seeking them out as a solution to their oral healthcare needs.

Even if you believe you are not the “typical” patient requiring this treatment, don’t toss aside the possibility on principle! Continue reading to learn more about why dentures benefit people of all ages!

Why Would I Need Dentures?

Many factors can contribute to losing one or more teeth that have absolutely no correlation to how old you are. Some reasons you might be considering dentures include:

  • Severe tooth decay. Sometimes our teeth become too damaged to be repaired with other standard treatments like root canals or fillings.
  • Periodontitis (gum disease). This causes our gums to recede from our teeth which can damage the jaw and eventually lead to tooth loss.
  • Grinding your teeth. If you are grinding your teeth regularly throughout the day and/or night, then you could be wearing down the protective enamel, as well as straining and weakening the supporting bones.
  • Poor nutrition. Food and beverages with acidic ingredients or high sugar content attract bacteria and erode your teeth. Not only that, but if you are not eating a balanced diet, then your body might be missing key nutrients that keep your jaw strong.
  • Health conditions. There are some health conditions beyond our control that cause tooth loss, like diabetes or juvenile arthritis.
  • Trauma. Accidents can happen to the best of us at the most unexpected times. Those involved in contact sports are particularly at risk of damaging their teeth.

How Might Dentures Benefit Me?

Now that you know why you might consider dentures (despite your age), you might be wondering how they can benefit you. There are several ways that dentures can improve your daily life, including:

  • Building confidence. If you have gaps in your smile, then you might hold yourself back from gatherings or activities where others might notice. When you fill in those holes, you can go confidently about your business knowing that you’re always putting your best face forward.
  • Keep Your Remaining Teeth Healthy. The hollow grooves left behind after a tooth falls out can cause damage to your remaining natural teeth because they can shift or wear down in different ways to compensate for the loss. Dentures will ensure your teeth stay in place and don’t become misaligned.
  • Dentures are more comfortable now. Big, bulky dentures are a thing of the past! New advancements in technology have led to dentures that are lighter, fit better, and can be customized to look more like your natural teeth.

If you have suffered from tooth loss and are looking for solutions, don’t let your perception of dentures hold you back from getting the best treatment available. Now that you know the many ways that dentures can benefit people of all ages, you can see how dentures just might be the perfect fit for you!
